NEW YORK (AP) — Norman Jewison, the acclaimed and versatile Canadian-born director whose Hollywood films ranged from Doris Day comedies and “Moonstruck” to social dramas such as the Oscar-winning "In the Heat of the Night," has died at age 97. Throughout his long career, Jewison combined light entertainment with topical films that appealed to him on a deeply personal level. (Jewison lost out for best director to Mike Nichols of "The Graduate"). Among those who encouraged Jewison while making “In the Heat of the Night”: Robert F. Kennedy, whom the director met during a ski trip in Sun Valley, Idaho. Jewison shifted to feature films in 1963 with the comedy “40 Pounds of Trouble,” starring Tony Curtis and Suzanne Pleshette.

Unions have nowhere near the pull, or members, that they did decades ago, yet something has changed. Fain became president of United Auto Workers this year, but his time with the union began at that then-Chrysler plant in 1994. He vowed to clean up the union and unite members following a wide-ranging scandal that landed two former presidents in prison. The union under Fain has threatened to hit more plants if there is not enough movement from automakers during negotiations. UPS was founded four years later by a couple of teenagers as the American Messenger Company. The Teamsters became for a time the nation’s biggest private-sector labor union, and UPS became the world’s biggest package delivery company. In 1997 there was a 15-day strike that “largely crippled” UPS, as The Times reported at the time. Today UPS is the biggest employer of Teamsters, with a third of the union’s members. Earlier in the negotiations the Teamsters put me in touch with a couple of UPS drivers so I could get a sense of the rank and file’s perspective.

Teamsters will likely authorize a UPS strike Friday

New York CNN —Members of the Teamsters union are almost certain to approve a massive strike at UPS in a vote concluding Friday. More than 330,000 Teamsters work at UPS (UPS), making it the largest unionized employer in the private sector. And it is crucial to the nation’s economy, with an estimated 6% of the United States’ gross domestic product, the broadest measure of economic activity, moving aboard UPS (UPS) trucks. But Teamsters General President Sean O’Brien, while acknowledging the progress that has been made, refuses to say whether he thinks a strike is likely or not.

New York CNN —The Teamsters union is holding a vote right now among more than 330,000 members to authorize a strike against UPS. If UPS workers strike, it would be the largest single-employer strike in US history. UPS (UPS) is simply too big – delivering an average of 17 million domestic packages a day – to have all the packages it handles moved by competitors. The strike vote being conducted through July 16 is likely to pass overwhelmingly, as virtually all such votes do. If a deal is reached, but a majority vote against it, there will still be a strike this time.

[1/2] Actor Robert Blake speaks to reporters as he walks to Burbank Courthouse in Burbank, California, U.S. August 29, 2005. A wrongful death lawsuit subsequently filed against Blake by her estate led to a civil court judgment that the actor was responsible for her slaying. Blake contended his wife was a victim of her own checkered past, gunned down by an unknown assailant. Blake's acting work was overshadowed four years later by the Bakley murder, which remains unsolved. A paternity test showed that the father was Blake, not Christian Brando, son of actor Marlon Brando, who Bakley had been dating simultaneously.
But Tomé's optimism comes as the Teamsters union, which represents more than 340,000 UPS workers, amps up pressure on the delivery giant. "Whether there is a strike of UPS workers is up to UPS," said Kara Deniz, a spokesperson for the Teamsters. The talks start in April, with the current national contract set to expire on July 31. In the fourth quarter of 2022, UPS workers delivered a global average of 28 million packages per day, according to the company's website. For the first time, Teamsters Union President Sean O'Brien and the union's secretary of the treasury will have seats at the bargaining table and be directly involved in negotiating the terms of the new contract.
Ted Cruz said his wife, Heidi Cruz, laughed off Donald Trump's insult about her looks. On "The View" on Monday, host Ana Navarro asked Cruz about Trump's 2016 insult. In response to Trump's 2016 insult, Cruz hit back at Trump on Twitter, writing: "Donald, real men don't attack women. In July 2016, Cruz said he would not back Trump "like a servile puppy dog" after insults to his family. In October 2018, Trump called Cruz "Beautiful Ted," a sharp turn from his campaign trail nickname for the senator, "Lying Ted."
In terms of big US labor contracts, however, this is just the opening act. And as with the rail unions, members are focused on staffing shortages and scheduling problems that they say have brought many employees to a breaking point. And soon after the Teamsters contract for UPS ground workers expires, contracts for UPS pilots and aircraft mechanics become amendable. That’s a major concern for unions whose members build engines and transmissions. But that settlement did not address the looming question of what a switch to EVs will mean for union workers going forward.
